For this  seminar, I have asked Dr Oswald to present the most current information on the diagnosis and treatment of select cardiac diseases and disorders that you are commonly asked to manage in your patients. Dr. Pollard’s discussion of the radiographic evaluation of the thorax has been designed to compliment Dr. Oswald’s lectures.  

Seminar Topics:

Lecture 1:   Canine Mitral Valve Disease

  • Staging MMVD to determine appropriate treatment interventions.
  • How to determine when to start treatment.  Which drugs make an early difference.
  • How effect are angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors?  What else can be done?
  • What role does spironolactone play in MMVD?
  • When to initiate and how to dose pimobendan in MMVD.
  • Loop diuretic therapy in CHF – use of furosemide and torsemide? 
  • Is surgery a realistic treatment for MMVD?
  • Use of Viagra and Cialis in MMVD.

 

 

Lecture 2:   Canine thoracic  radiography – is it heart failure or something else?

This lecture will compliment Dr. Oswald’s first lecture.  Learn how Dr. Pollard interprets thoracic radiographs with a specific focus on the heart.  Rachel will use clinical cases to demonstrate key concepts providing a very practical discussion.

 

Lecture 3:   Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy

 
  • Treatment differences in mitral valve disease vs dilated cardiomyopathy. 
  • How do cardiac biomarkers influence DCM treatment?
  • How and when to start treatment in DCM patients.
  • Treatment of congestive heart failure in DCM patients.
  • Update on diet-related DCM.
 

Lecture 4:   Feline thoracic radiographs –is it heart failure or something else?

This lecture will compliment Dr. Oswald’s feline lecture.  Learn how Dr. Pollard interprets feline thoracic radiographs with a special focus on the heart.  Rachel will use clinical cases to demonstrate key concepts providing a very practical discussion.

 

Lecture 5:   Feline Cardiomyopathy

 
  • How to determine which cat has heart disease.  Murmurs, gallops, BNP & screening ECHO exams.
  • Is Atenolol or Diltiazem an effective preclinical treatment?  Are there other effective early treatments for feline cardiomyopathy?
  • What are the best treatment strategies for treating congestive heart failure in cats?  Feline response to diuretics, ACE-inhibitors and pimobendan.
  • Update on thromboprophylaxis treatment in feline cardiomyopathy patients?
