Drs. Oswald and MacPhail are going to discuss the diagnosis and practical medical and surgical management of many common practical cancer-related issues that can be performed in your clinical practice. This course will present a practical approach to the diagnosis and management of these common issues using a combination of didactic and case-based teaching.

Gastrointestinal

  • I’m seeing a dog with significant weight loss and diarrhea.  Cancer is on my differential diagnoses list. What do you think is the best way to obtain GI samples for diagnostic examination ?

  • I have a feline patient with intestinal signs and thick intestines. I’m not sure whether this cat has an inflammatory bowel disease or intestinal lymphoma.  How can I determine the underlying diagnosis ?

  • Or should I just treat with prednisolone ?

  • Which supportive treatments really help maintain GI function in patients undergoing chemotherapy or Palladia? Are they different across traditional chemo vs Palladia ?

  • I’ve got Cerenia, Entyce, Elura and Mirtaz in my hospital pharmacy.  How should I give these drugs when supporting GI function in my cancer patients ?

  • What is this new drug Canalevia-CA1 ?  Can I use Canalevia-CA1 as an anti-diarrheal outside of chemotherapy patients ?

Urinary

  • Antibiotic therapy hasn’t helped what I thought was a UTI. What should I do from here ?

  • What is the BRAF test and why should I be using it more in my practice ?

  • What can a Cox-2 selective NSAID drug do to help a dog with transitional cell carcinoma ?

Mast Cell Tumors

  • How important is it that I get a cytologic based grade on a dog with MCT that I’m considering using Stelfonta in ?

  • How do I manage the wound left after a Stelfonta injection ?

Lymphoma

  • Laverdia-CA1 – When should I consider using this new twice weekly oral treatment for canine lymphoma?

  • What should I do to prevent GI issues with Laverdia-CA1 use?

Hematology

  • Should I routinely give antibiotics to my patients that are going to receive a chemotherapy drug ?

  • When should I worry about a patient with cancer-associated myelosuppression ?

  • What should I do when cancer or chemotherapy affects red blood cells or platelets  ?

Pain Management

  • Cancer is painful. What can I do to make my oncology patients more comfortable ?

  • Is it safe to use the new NGF monoclonal Ab’s for pain in cancer patients
