Bio Bio has teamed up with ROAM adventures to offer our first trip to Iceland.

This multi-sport adventure explores the southern part of Iceland in an active and engaging manner. In one week, we’ll hike, bike, kayak, walk on glaciers, snorkel, 4×4 and explore waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes, caves and natural hot springs. Of course, we’ll take in many of the “classic experiences”, like snorkeling the continental rift in Silfra, but more importantly, we’ll use Super Jeeps and 4×4 trails to escape the busy tourist spots.

As we depart Reykjavík, we truly enter the land of fire and ice as we emerge into austere volcanic foothills punctuated by surreal steam vents. In and around Hveragerði, we’ll saddle up on electric mountain bikes, journeying down single track trails and visiting remote uncrowded hot springs. From here, the land swoops through a flat wide Coastal Plain, full of verdant horse farms before the ruggedly jagged mountains thrust upwards on the inland side.

Our specialized Super Jeeps allows us to ford rivers that regular 4×4’s cannot, gaining us access to remote places like Thorsmok, named after the Norse god, Thor. This protected reserve, offers scenes seemingly plucked from an enchanting fantasy. It’s a hiker’s paradise and a verdant realm clasped by snow-capped mountain ridges, wild-flower-filled valleys, curling gorges, icy rivers and three looming glaciers (Tindfjallajökull, Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull). The glaciers, actually protect this quiet spot from some of the regions harsher weather making it warmer and drier. The last two spectacular nights are spent in deluxe heated glamping tents with a campfire ring and evenings under the stars.

The next leg of our journey brings us face to face with the Sólheimajökull Glacier where we will join expert guides and use ice axes and crampons to traverse the ice. There will also be an opportunity to kayak among icebergs that have calved into the lagoon, before reaching our fabled storybook lodging at Hotel Anna.

The following morning, we head further east where we’ll saddle up for a two-hour horseback ride at Eyjafjalla before overnighting in Vik at Iceland’s southernmost point.

Our final travel day will be diverse as we’ll visit a number of famous waterfalls and hike into a lava tunnel before returning to Reykjavík and a cultural exploratory day to follow.
